How You Too Can Easily Determine If the Projection Screen You Want Is Too Big

There are a lot of so-called rules about projection screens and home theater design. One of the most common questions that comes up is: what's the right size projection screen?

A number of factors play a role here, such as the projector you're using, the amount of ambient light and where you are sitting.

Instead of looking at the rules, we are going to shake things up a little to create a few checkpoints that will tell you whether your screen is too big. This is a great way of getting the right solution for your room, even when you are not a home theater expert.

1. Your image looks dim

The light coming from your projector is spread over the surface of the projection screen. So the bigger the screen, the more the light will have to be spread. That means that when the image looks to dull, it's better to go for a smaller screen.

2. The projected image is smaller than the projection screen area

When your projector is mounted at a certain distance, you should be able to fill the screen right until you reach the black borders. This will give you the best possible picture, as the black borders will give the image more punch because of the contrast they create. If you can't fill the whole screen, even when you use the zoom function of the projector, the screen is too big. That means a smaller screen will be better. Alternatively, you can move your projector further away from the screen, until you can fill the whole screen.

3. When watching a movie, you feel like you're missing things

When you're watching a movie and it seems like you are missing things, you are probably too close to the screen. At the right distance, the image should be as big as your field of image. You can easily see if that's the case, because that means you can watch a movie without having to turn your head from left to right or vice versa.
